This new one-and-a-half hour tour of the city centre focuses on the underground dimension of the Berlin Wall. For the GDR “border regime” existed not only on the surface, but also underground. The question of how to prevent escapes through tunnels, through the sewers, through cellars or by underground railway caused the East German border guards considerable headaches. But the GDR leadership also had a great interest in the Berlin underground for quite different reasons. The tour is the result of several years of research and opens up an unusual view of the Berlin Wall – from the escape tunnels and ghost stations to “Operation Uta”. The tour “Underground history of the Berlin Wall” takes place on the surface along the Wall in the former border strip.
